About Depression

Understanding Depression

Depression is more than feeling sad — it affects how you think, feel, and function every day.

Depression can feel like a heavy weight that makes even the simplest tasks — getting out of bed, responding to messages, or enjoying things you once loved — feel overwhelming.

Some experience persistent low mood and fatigue, while others notice irritability, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep or appetite, or a sense of emptiness that will not shift.

Whatever your experience looks like, depression is not a sign of weakness — it is a signal that something needs attention. With the right support, it is possible to feel like yourself again.

With evidence-based approaches like CBT and DBT, combined with compassionate, personalised support, you can experience meaningful change and find your way forward.

Our counselling approach

At Mind Sounds Counselling, we specialise in depression counselling using evidence-based approaches proven to help you recover from depression. Our sessions draw on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) to address both the negative thinking patterns and emotional experiences that maintain depression.

CBT helps you identify and challenge the negative thought cycles that feed depression — the "I'm not good enough" or "nothing will ever change" beliefs that can feel so convincing when you're struggling with low mood. DBT adds powerful emotional regulation and distress tolerance skills that help you manage depressive symptoms and build resilience when things feel overwhelming.

Beyond the techniques, what matters most is the relationship itself. You'll work with someone who brings genuine warmth, empathy, and compassion to every depression counselling session. This safe, non-judgmental space is where real healing from depression happens — where you feel truly heard and supported as you navigate your journey back to yourself and rediscover hope.

How sessions are structured

Each 45-minute session is delivered online via secure video conferencing, accessible from anywhere in Australia. Sessions are available Tuesdays and Fridays, scheduled weekly, fortnightly, or monthly based on your needs.

Each session includes a check-in on your mood, exploration of what's happening, practical skills work, and planning for the week ahead. You'll leave with concrete strategies to support your recovery.

What matters most is the relationship. An empathetic, caring counsellor creates the safety and trust you need to heal. When evidence-based structure meets genuine human warmth, that's when real change happens.

WHO IT HELPS

When depression counselling can help you

You might benefit from depression counselling if you're experiencing any of the following signs of depression:

Book your session
  • Persistent low mood or sadness that lasts more than two weeks
  • Loss of interest in activities you used to enjoy
  • Difficulty sleeping, or sleeping too much
  • Fatigue and low energy, even after rest
  • Trouble concentrating or making decisions
  • Feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or hopelessness
  • Withdrawal from friends, family, or social situations

You do not need a formal diagnosis to seek depression counselling. If you're experiencing persistent low mood or any of the above signs, that is reason enough to reach out. Depression counselling can also work alongside support from your GP or psychiatrist as part of a comprehensive approach to depression recovery.
